How to choose a software company: what to look for

Choosing the right partner is as important as the project itself. The wrong choice costs time, money and morale. What should you look for?

A software project is a partnership with the firm you choose that lasts months, even years. That's why the 'cheapest quote' often turns into the most expensive decision. Here are the criteria to weigh when choosing the right firm.

1. Portfolio and references

Look at what they've done before — not just the visuals, but the problem they solved. Have they delivered work at a similar scale and in a similar sector? If possible, talk to past clients: was delivery on time, and how did they act when things went wrong?

2. Communication and transparency

A good firm doesn't hide behind jargon; it explains the process clearly, reports regularly and delivers bad news on time too. If you can't get clear answers in the first meeting, you won't get them during the project either.

  • Technical competence: are their technologies current and sustainable?
  • Process: how do they work — ad hoc, or agile and predictable?
  • After delivery: do they leave you alone, or provide maintenance and support?
  • Ownership: do the code and data belong to you, or are you locked in to them?
A vendor delivers the work and leaves; a technology partner stays as your business grows. That difference is everything in the long run.

3. Value, not price

The lowest quote is usually cheaper by cutting something: quality, testing, security or support. The question to ask isn't 'how much?' but 'what am I getting for this — and what happens afterward?'
